Tips for choosing fabric for children's clothing

All parents agree that caring for children's clothes is a Herculean task. All the chocolates and cookies they nibble on inevitably leave marks on that nice dress or pair of pants, not to mention mud puddles and dirt cakes. Plus, toddlers' sensitive skin can be affected by certain fabrics and textures. That's why we're offering some simple tips to apply when choosing fabric for wholesale children's clothing.

Fabric Type:

As a general rule, it is good to avoid synthetic fabrics for both children's and adult wholesale clothing because of their high chemical content, which could cause allergic reactions to their delicate skin. Try to use natural fabrics like cotton, wool and silk at all costs. For toddlers, natural fabrics from organic farming are the best choice.

Weaving the fabric:

If you hold the fabric up to the light, you can see how tightly or loosely woven the fabric is. If the fabric is loosely woven, it may not stand up to heavy use. So try to avoid lightly woven fabrics if your child is a Superman or Wonderwoman.

Fade resistance:

Children's clothes are likely to be washed more frequently than yours, mainly because of their heavy use. You need to choose a fabric that can resist fading from repeated washing. Always choose a fabric that has the same base color as the print color. If the base color is white and the fabric is dyed a different color, the color may fade after repeated washings. Keep in mind that bright colors tend to fade more quickly.

Wrinkle-free:

You don't want to have to iron your child's clothes after every wash, so try opting for a wrinkle-free fabric to make it easier. Take the fabric in hand and squeeze it. If it leaves wrinkles, it's best to avoid them.

Children's comfort:

Keep this in mind when sewing special outfits and party clothes. The lining you would normally use may not be comfortable for little ones to wear. To remedy this, wash it 2 or 3 times to make it super soft, then use it for sewing.

Fabric durability:

Children get tired of their clothes very quickly. Choose a stretchy fabric so that the clothes can be used for at least a year or two. Fabrics like elastics and knits tend to stretch and are the best choice for children's clothing.

Fabric weight:

Some fabrics tend to be heavier than others, even though they may look beautiful and comfortable. When it comes to children's clothing, lightweight fabrics like cotton voile, silk and satin are the best option. They are not only lightweight, they also add to the beauty of the outfit.

Fabric color:

It is common to opt for shades of pink for girls and shades of blue for boys. But times are changing and it's good to think outside the box. Your child's skin tone should also be taken into account when choosing a color. While most colors are appropriate for light-skinned children, darker-skinned children often look best in whites, pinks and greens.
