10 steps to create a formal table setting

There is nothing more elegant than a dinner table with a beautiful formal table setting for each guest. It can turn an ordinary meal into an extraordinary one. And make each person at the table feel like they are part of something special. However, recreating the table settings you see in magazines or on television can be much more difficult than you think. Even with a keen eye for detail, you may miss something. And just like that, you could turn your exciting vision into a stressful situation. Fortunately, there's no need to worry!

Create a table setting easily

Step 1: Place your placemat

Whether you've chosen a placemat with a graphic design or a more traditional one, it's the first thing that should go on your table. A placemat should be placed in front of each chair where guests will be seated. If these need to be cleaned, it's time to wash them! vintage tableware

Step 2: Place the plates

Create your formal table setting by placing the largest dinner plate directly on top of your placemat. Make sure it's in the center to achieve a more pleasing aesthetic. Next, place the salad plate in the middle of it.

Step 3: Place the bowl

The soup bowl is next and should be placed directly on the salad plate. However, if you are not planning to serve soup, you can place an appetizer plate on the salad plate instead.

Step 4: Lay out the left side of the service

The dinner fork is one of the largest in the set and should be to the left of your plates on the placemat. Similarly, the smaller salad fork should be placed to the left of the dinner fork. Both should also be placed vertically to align with the placemat.

Step 5: Lay out the right side of the service

The serving knife, which looks like a butter knife, goes to the right of the plates and on top of the placemat. Also, to the right of it goes the coffee spoon and to the right of it goes the soup spoon.

Step 6: Lay out the top of the service

The cake fork should be just above the placemat in a horizontal position (the tines of the fork should face to the right). The dessert spoon should be on top, also in a horizontal position (although the rounded edge should face to the left).

Step 7: Set up the bread and butter plate

The small plate with bread and butter should be at the top left of the service, just above the corner of the placemat.

Step 8: Arrange the bread and butter knife

The single bread and butter knife should be placed on top of the bread plate, diagonally across from the serving plates.

Step 9: Arrange the drinking glasses

Drinking glasses should be at the top right of the place setting, off the placemat. In general, they should be there in order of use.

Step 10: Laying out the towel

The last step is to place your napkin on the outside of the placemat, on the left side. Enjoy your meal!
