Dogs, just like people, need regular care. Some treatments require a visit to a veterinarian, while others, more common, can be provided by the owner himself, at home.
Veterinary care and its importance
- Dewormers:
The main intestinal parasites of dogs are roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms. These worms damage the digestive tract or interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients, or both. Intestinal parasitic infections are diagnosed by finding worm eggs (or sometimes real worms or worm segments) in fecal samples. Administering dewormers in time helps prevent the appearance of worms.
- Vaccines :
Vaccination is a key element of preventative medicine in dogs, just as it is in humans. Vaccines are given to stimulate the immune system against infection before exposure to disease.
- Medication :
They must be administered regularly, like antihistamines if your dog has allergies, and flea medications to fight against fleas and ticks.
Adult dogs must undergo a complete veterinary examination at least once a year, hence the importance of subscribing to mutual insurance for dogs. Puppies need veterinary visits usually every 3 or 4 weeks until they are around 4 months old. Older dogs (over 7 to 8 years old) should see their veterinarian twice a year or more frequently, as illnesses are more common in older pets and may be identified earlier. Note also that there are now animal specific insurance which work in the same way as traditional insurance.
Necessary personal and regular care
- The bath :
Just like you, your dog needs to bathe regularly. No frequency has been established, but to avoid fleas, it is preferable to favor “small showers” every week or every ten days.
- Brushing your teeth:
Dogs need dental care throughout their lives. You can do the brushing yourself or by a groomer.
- Walks :
The walk serves as exercise for your dog while allowing him to get a breath of fresh air.
- Affection:
Your little companion needs caresses and cuddles. This will strengthen your relationship and de-stress your pet.
- Games :
Games are there to entertain your pet, but can also help you train them.
- Brushing:
Your dog’s coat should be brushed regularly to remove shed hairs and prevent hair tangling. Grooming your dog is important, especially for dogs that have shaggy or thick coats or that get tangled easily. You can also take your companion to a groomer to have this done.
So, in addition to your dog’s diet and exercise, other aspects of general care are necessary in order to keep your dog healthy throughout his life. These include routine veterinary care for vaccinations, parasite control and dental care, grooming and protection from household hazards.
